Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth (ARC)

Divergent Rating: 4 out of 5

DivergentSummary: In dystopian Chicago, the city is divided into five factions with each faction focusing on one quality or personality trait to cultivate. There is Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). At the age of 16, faction members take an aptitude test to determine their faction placement, but each teen gets to decide their fate themselves. Do they stay in the faction they were born into, or do they leave and risk losing everything, like their families?  Beatrice makes a surprising choice and does things she never thought she would; fight, get tattoos, look at herself in the mirror and laugh. Things are not perfect though. Beatrice holds a secret, one that can ruin her if it gets into the wrong hands. However it seems that her secret isn't the only one that can ruin the perfect society (or societies) that she knows. Something else is brewing and she might be able to save the one's she loves.

My thoughts: I loved this book! I hadn't really read dystopian novels before, so this was my first and it was wonderful. The closer to the end it got, the harder it was to put down. The book really took a surprising turn, which made me really question society. If you really dig deep and look into the words, you can see a lot of our society in this dystopian one and it makes me question if we're headed for a dystopian society our self.

I feel that this novel has the perfect match of romance and life in a society so unlike our own. We get to see some romance, and the typical questions that one might ask themselves as they are growing up, but we also see the characters grow and form into either 'perfect' members of society or not so great ones based upon the choices they make within their own factions. This is a book you will not want to miss!
